The Grumpkin Reloaded (Awesome, Tiny PC Race)
Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 05:18PM We've done some polishing and he's never looked better, but the Grumpkin's path from the forest of imbalance back to the pristine, unnatural beauty of the critter crate was not without... potholes?
Here the analogy fell apart.
Making a tiny PC race is harder to do than making medium or small PC races. Once you get more granular than small you're dealing with a whole set of balance challenges that the grappling-enabled races take for granted, and I was tempted by a couple of people on the MCB to simply, as Rita Repulsa often said, "make my monster grow!" Some people also took issue with the little guy's ability to condense his body into a miniature, grumpy tank. His +1 natural armour bonus didn't win anyone over, either. And Flight! No one wants to talk about his little bee wings in the positive.
My goal was a tiny PC race without a level adjustment, and I wanted him to be cool and dynamic enough to fill any role in the party and to be fun to play. Because of that, and the severe limitations and difficulties inherent with his size, I kept most of the things that make him attractive to play, and I think he's still balanced enough to be a powerful +0 ECL, alongside dwarves who have a list of racial traits as long as a verdant reclaimer's vine.
What do you think?
