Amazing Transforming 4E Solo Critters * Level 6 Primordial Changeling and Primordial Devourer
Monday, January 26, 2009 at 11:28AM Phew.
Hey there, readers. Please enjoy the Primordial Changeling, a level 6 regenerative were-snake solo I’m looking forward to throwing at my players next session. You can find him, plus the swarm golem and lava elemental (both trans-role critters) in the Weekly Critter Crate.
The primary form is rather clever, and its great speed, stealth, and regeneration could make for a seriously dangerous opponent, or even recurring villain that knows to hit hard before escaping. The PCs will be desperate to heal their hamstringed legs and weakened bodies, and the changeling could return after a couple of minutes—fully healed, to find a group of heroes with far fewer resources at hand to deal with him. Fine tactics that I’m actually a little worried will cause TPKs, but then 6th-level PCs aren’t exactly toothless, and things seldom go the way of my best-laid plans.
Of course, things only get worse if the PCs pull together and strike hard enough to cause the changeling’s ferocious transformation... I’m really looking forward to biting an opponent and then doing a vicious crocodile roll over all my enemies, taking the unfortunate bitee along for the ride.
Fun times! The next step will be to create critters that can change form as a power, either at-will or recharging, to access new abilities. Lurkers and skirmishers would work especially well as their abilities would allow them to slip around corners or into shadows to transform.
Speaking of critters, I just discovered Wyatt Salazar’s home-brew menagerie of critters—he’s got 70 (!) monsters for heroic PCs to battle. They’re all flavored for his campaign, but that hardly matters when it’s so easy to re-skin and re-purpose monsters in 4E. Check ‘em out.
