Playing D&D will neither hurt nor kill you (unless you choke on a cheesy poof, but then you may have had deeper issues). Your character, however, can "die" in the same way that he/she ever lived (in the imaginations of the players).

Keep in mind that all the rules of D&D are yours to change, including any about death.
