No. While the core books are rather pricey at 40-50$ a pop, you can often get the set of three (that's the Player's Handbook, the Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual) for less than $100. More than one PH is recommended for a group of 4-5 players, but then all you'll need is a set of dice, which will run you a dollar per at your local gaming shop.
