A number of different things could happen. It's likely that most, if not all, of the other players survived the encounter. In that case you would roll a new character and join the group when you're ready.

Sometimes, the whole group is wiped out by a clever monster, a string of bad dice rolls, poor tactics, or a combination of these factors. This is called a TPK (total player kill), and it's usually an unfortunate event for everyone involved. The players have lost the characters that they've invested their time into, and the DM no longer has a group of heroes to watch play through his story.

What happens next is up to the group. After a TPK is often a good time to sit back, sigh, and ask the group a few questions about the game. Were they enjoying themselves? Would they like to keep playing in this world, and along this storyline? Would they like someone else to DM (run the game)? What kind of game would they like to play in next? And so on.

Since the point of D&D is to have fun, players are often agreeable, even after their characters have kicked the bucket.
